You're Engaged! What's Next?
Advice from Samantha Maroney, Senior Venue Sales Consultant at Bavaria Downs
You said “yes!” and now the excitement (and planning) begins. We chatted with Samantha Maroney, one of our Senior Venue Sales Consultants at Bavaria Downs, home to 3 of Minnesota’s top Wedding Venues, to get her best advice for couples wondering what to do right after getting engaged.
“Before you dive into planning, take a moment to talk with your partner,” Samantha says. “The most important part of this entire journey is your marriage and the life you’re building together. Everything else should stem from that foundation.”
Once you’re ready to get organized, create a shared wedding email and a simple spreadsheet to track your budget, inquiries, and vendor details. It may not sound glamorous, but having everything in one place will make planning feel much easier from day one.
Next, think through your guest list so you can start narrowing down venues. A good rule of thumb: expect around 20% of your guests to decline. If you plan to host both your ceremony and reception in the same location, make sure the venue has a solid indoor backup plan for unexpected weather. And when possible, tour venues in person. “Photos never tell the full story,” Samantha shares. “Seeing a space firsthand can completely change your perspective.”
If you come across an all-inclusive venue, that’s a major green flag. Venues that include décor, coordination, and planning support often save couples both time and money while cutting out a lot of stress.
Samantha also reminds couples that you don’t have to get married on a Saturday or during peak season. Fridays, Sundays, or even winter weddings can be just as beautiful — and often more affordable. “Winter weddings are cozy, candlelit, and so inviting,” she says. “They feel like something straight out of a Hallmark movie.”
Most importantly, slow down and enjoy it all. Wedding planning can be busy, but it’s also a season worth savoring. Stay focused on celebrating your love and the people who mean the most to you. On your wedding day, take a quiet moment together after the ceremony to soak it all in before the celebration continues.
